Books. There’s a quote by John Waters that reads “We need to make books cool again. If you go home with somebody and they don’t have books, don’t fuck them.”

I think that’s a fair sentiment. Books teach you a lot about the world, inspire you, change you, scare you, and make your day. There’s something really whimsical and special about owning a variety of literature, and nothing beats the smell of an old book or the touch of a new one.

If you have trouble focusing on reading, start slow. We live in a world of instant gratification which can sometimes make simpler things a chore or an effort. Start slow if you have a hard time paying attention, read for 10 minutes a day for a few days and then 15 minutes, keep adding on until you get back in the swing of reading.

What else can reading do for you? Well you can always have one of those  books that has a flask hidden inside of it, you can use it as part of your secret revolving door, and you can meet other people who share similar taste in literature. Sounds like a pretty win-win situation, right? Just give it time if you haven’t been reading as much as you used to, or you haven’t ever given books a chance. Local used bookstores are great too, it’ll give you an excuse to go there and bask in the scent of old books and the auras of pseudo-intellectuals.
